Scavenger Hunt is a class game that pupils play in teams on their own devices. Each team has 10 scrolls hidden around a little Yorkshire world: a minster, a stream that falls off a cliff, walled fields with sheep, a beach cove and a cave. Some scrolls are in chests out in the open, only seen by that team. Others are tucked away in places you have to search, like the hay cart, the boat or behind a pillar in the minster.
Finding a scroll opens it on every device in the team at once, so they solve the puzzle inside together. Or they can press Solve later, carry on hunting and come back to it from their scroll bag. Every scroll has three hearts. The team that solves the most scrolls wins.
Choose the age of your class, a topic, the team size (on their own, or teams of 2, 3 or 4) and how long the hunt lasts. Pupils scan the QR or type the 5-digit code at sageteachers.com/join and pick a character. Teams are made for you, balanced and random, and you can shuffle them. Three short boards explain the rules, then everyone hunts at once.
The whiteboard shows the whole map with every child as a name pin in their team colour. When someone finds a scroll, a little camera pops up following them for a few seconds. Team cards down the side show how many scrolls each team has found and solved. When the time is up, the board goes through all ten scrolls with their answers, then the standings and the podium.
Every hunt has the same ten kinds of puzzle, each small enough for a team to solve in about a minute: a word search, a mini crossword with its own keyboard, a triangle match, a mystery word, a word ladder, fill the gaps, unscramble the words, a secret code, put them in order and odd one out. Older classes get trickier versions. Type a topic and Sage writes them for the age of your class, or pick a ready-made pack.
How does Scavenger Hunt work?
Pupils join on their own devices with a code or QR and are put into teams. Each team has 10 scrolls hidden around a small 3D world, in chests and in places to search like a hay cart, a boat or behind a pillar. Finding a scroll opens it on every phone in that team, and they solve the puzzle inside together. The team that solves the most scrolls wins.
What puzzles are in the scrolls?
Ten different quick puzzles, one per scroll: a word search, a mini crossword, a triangle match, a mystery word, a word ladder, fill the gaps, unscramble the words, a secret code, put them in order and odd one out. They are pitched to the age you choose, from 5 to 18.
Where do the puzzles come from?
Type any topic and Sage writes all ten puzzles for the age of your class, or pick a ready-made pack. Every scroll shows on a preview screen with its answers before the lobby opens, and any one can be made again for free.
What devices does it work on?
Laptops and Chromebooks use the arrow keys or WASD, with Space to jump and Enter to search. On iPads and phones children tap where they want to run. Nothing to install and no pupil accounts.
How long does a hunt take?
You choose 15, 20 or 30 minutes. The hunt ends when the time is up or every team has finished all ten scrolls, then the board goes through the answers, the standings and the podium.
Is it free?
Each class game uses one token. Pupils never pay and never need an account.
Want a hunt on paper around the school instead? Treasure Hunt prints puzzle cards to hide around your room. Parkour and Lightning Round are more games every pupil plays on their own device.
