Frequently asked questions

How do I make an extension task?

Two steps. Choose the age range, then say what you are working on today, and you get four open-ended maths challenges to choose from, each with a picture.

How long does a challenge take?

About 5 to 15 minutes of a child's time. Each challenge has no single right answer, so it suits an early finisher who has reached the end of the work.

Can I print them?

Yes. Tap the challenges you want and they print as four cards on one A4 page, so you cut them out and stick them straight into books. Choose one and it prints four times.

Can I use it on the whiteboard?

Yes. The modelling board puts the card on the left and squared paper with a pen on the right, and a Possible approaches reveal is there when you want to open the thinking up.

Is it free?

Yes. Open-Ended Questions is free to try. Generating a set of challenges with Sage uses one token. Every account gets 20 free tokens, and Pro gives 50 a day.

Which maths topics does it cover?

Any maths topic for ages 5 to 17: place value, fractions, measures, geometry and more. Type what you are working on today and the challenges are written around it.
