Whisper Wild is a noise meter for the classroom board. A cut-paper wild place fills the screen, and while the class keeps the noise under the line the animals come out. Every animal is a child from your class, with their name riding above it, so the whole room is watching for their own animal to turn up. It's free to try.
If you've used Shy Safari, you'll know the idea: stay quiet and an animal comes out. It's a great idea, but the animal just wanders about, so after a while it gets a bit samey. In Whisper Wild the animals interact with each other and the place they live, and every one is named after a child in the class you're teaching.
"I tried Shy Safari with my class and loved the idea, but I noticed it was lacking something. So I thought, why not build what I thought it was missing?" Rob, primary teacher and the maker of Sage Teachers
The Galápagos Islands, with giant tortoises, sea lions dozing on the rocks and whales out in the deep blue. Khao Sok in Thailand, an emerald lake under misty limestone towers, with gibbons swinging along the vines, elephants and hornbills. And the Yorkshire Dales, with lambs in the meadow, a fox by the wall and an owl in the big tree. Forty animals live in each one, all real animals in their real places.
The animals don't just wander on and stand there. They meet each other and get on with things: a finch cleans a tortoise, a booby dives into a bait ball, a heron eyes up a frog. Nobody ever gets eaten (the hunters always miss).
Pick a place and your class, press Start and allow the microphone. Stay quiet and the first animal comes out. The longer the calm lasts, the more come out at once, and the cast keeps changing so everyone gets a turn.
If it gets too loud, a quick burst is ignored. If the noise stays over the line, the animals quietly hide. Nothing already earned is lost, and as soon as the room settles they pop back out, which is usually the best bit. Children pick that up from the screen without being told.
It measures how loud the room is and nothing else. No sound is recorded, saved or sent anywhere. It's worth telling the class that too, as it takes away the urge to test it.
The settings sit out of the children's sight in the Settings button: the line (Silent, Whispers or Partner talk), the sensitivity for your room, how often a new animal comes, fact cards, and a field guide of every animal each class has spotted so far. Finish shows a short summary for the class, and Timer counts down a set time in the header.
Is Whisper Wild free?
It is free to try. Sign in and press Start: a free account uses one token the first time it is opened each day, and opening it again that day is free. Pro accounts use it as much as they like.
Is Whisper Wild like Shy Safari?
It's the same idea (stay quiet and the animals come out) with a lot more going on. The animals meet and react to each other and the place they live, more come out the longer the class stays calm, and every one is named after a child in your class.
Does it record my classroom?
No. The microphone only measures how loud the room is, moment to moment. Nothing is recorded, saved or sent anywhere.
What happens when the class gets too loud?
A quick burst is ignored. If the noise stays over the line, the animals quietly hide. Nothing already earned is lost, and when the room is calm again they pop back out.
Can the animals show my pupils' names?
Yes. Pick one of your saved classes and every animal is a child from it, first names only. The cast keeps changing, so the whole class gets a turn.
Can I set how strict it is?
Yes. In Settings pick the line (Silent, Whispers or Partner talk) and slide the sensitivity to suit your room.
Want something simpler? Bouncy Balls is our other noise meter, where the balls bounce harder as the room gets louder. Lesson Timer keeps an activity on track, and Lofi Beats sets a calm working mood.
