Weekly Arithmetic: a free weekly arithmetic test maker for primary teachers

A weekly arithmetic test for every week of the year

Weekly Arithmetic prints a 20-question test for any week of the school year, with the answers on a second page. Each year group has 36 tests, planned in the order the year is taught. Every week brings in the skill just taught and keeps the earlier ones going, so week 1 isn't a cliff and nothing gets forgotten by the summer.

How it works

  1. Pick the age of your class. UK or US is set from where you are, and you can switch it.
  2. Pick Ready Made and tap this week on the year planner, or type what you've taught.
  3. Check the questions. Change any of them, or press New numbers for an equal test.
  4. Print the test and its answer sheet.
  5. Mark it together on the board, one question at a time or the whole paper at once.

What is a weekly arithmetic test?

A short written test, usually 20 questions, that a class sits once a week to keep calculation sharp. About three questions are on that week's new skill and the rest recap earlier weeks and the year before. Weeks with no arithmetic taught, such as shape or time, are recap weeks.

Which year groups does it cover?

UK Year 1 to Year 6, and US Kindergarten to Grade 5. The UK tests follow the England national curriculum and the US tests follow Common Core. Year 1 and Kindergarten get 10 questions, every other year gets 20. From Year 5 (Grade 4 in the US) sums are printed in a line, as on the SATs paper; younger classes get them set out in columns.

Can I get a different version of the same test?

Yes. New numbers gives an equal test with the same kinds of question, which is handy for an absent child, a re-sit, or a class that remembers last year's paper. Easier and Harder keep the same questions with friendlier or tougher numbers, so a group working below can sit the same test as everyone else. Nothing about the age or level is printed on the sheet.

Can I change a question?

Yes, every question and every answer is a box you can type in. Type your own question and the answer is worked out for you; type over an answer and yours stands. The yellow arrow on each row swaps one question for another of the same kind.

How do we mark it?

On the board. One at a time shows each question big, then the answer, and for column sums the written method underneath. Show it with counters opens Formal Methods with that sum loaded, so a question half the class got wrong becomes the reteach there and then. Whole paper shows all the questions at once for swap-and-mark, with every answer hidden until you tap it.

Is it free?

It is free to try. Making a test uses one token on a free account, and Pro is unlimited. New numbers, Easier, Harder and printing that test again are all free.
