Time Detectives — a history timeline guessing game for the classroom

A free-to-try history timeline game for the classroom

Time Detectives turns dates into detective work. An invention, building or famous person appears on the board and the class works out when it's from, marking the spot on a timeline — the closer the guess, the more points. Play it teacher-led on the whiteboard, or as a live multiplayer game where every pupil places their own guess on their own device and it all ends on the podium. Choose from 500 years of inventions, 10,000 years of buildings and monuments, or 2,000 years of famous people — or type your own topic to generate a themed set that zooms the timeline to the era.

Frequently asked questions

What is Time Detectives?

A history timeline guessing game. An invention, building or famous person appears and the class works out when it's from, marking the spot on a timeline. The closer the guess, the more points — up to 10,000 for spot on.

How do pupils join the multiplayer game?

They go to sageteachers.com/join on any phone, tablet or laptop and type the 4-digit code from the board, or scan the QR code. Nothing to install and no accounts needed.

Can I play it on the whiteboard without devices?

Yes — Whiteboard mode is teacher-led on the board: the class discusses each round and one guess is placed together. Multiplayer mode lets every pupil guess on their own device.

Can I make a game about my own topic?

Yes — type a topic (like the Romans or the Tudors) and Time Detectives generates a themed set of rounds, zooming the timeline to fit that era. The built-in Inventions, Buildings and Famous People sets are free to play.
